Can a cat's coat pattern change?

We found a exhausted cat, put some adds up and called around to find the owner. Someone showed up (over two weeks later) shoddy to see if the cat was theirs, but the pictures they sent didn't seem to be from the same cat as the one we found.
Unblemished markings on a cat do not change - if one cat had more white on the face then the other its not the same cat.
